Your word for the year represents your energy, captures your attitude, and serves as your companion throughout the year. It’ll be your daily reminder of what’s most important to you, helping you to make decisions, maintain focus, and provide clarity.
Let's take a look back at previous years: In 2019, my word for the year was "creativity." It guided me to take a month off to fully dedicate myself to reconnecting with my inner creative side. This led to numerous spontaneous and unexpected experiences. I enrolled in acting classes, worked as an extra, and even filmed my very first short movie.
My process of discovering my word follows the same structure every year. Follow these five steps to find your word for the upcoming year:
1. Reflect
Take out your notebook and reflect on the following questions:
- What insights did I gain in the last 12 months?
- How would I like to embrace those in the upcoming year?
- Which wishes, dreams and needs do I have right now?
- How do I want to feel in the upcoming year?
- In which areas would I like to develop personally and professionally?
This will provide you with initial associations and ideas for your word.
2. Breathe
Now, take your time to let these associations and ideas develop without consciously working on them. Some people find it helpful to meditate for a few minutes, take a short walk in the fresh cold air, or simply observe the clouds in the sky. Take a few deep breaths to help you relax and find calmness.
3. Feel
By now, you should have come up with several words. Which are those? Maybe words like love, courage, freedom, or adventure. Or actions like writing, moving, or forgiving. Or adjectives like generous, confident, or light. Write them down and feel into each one. Which words seem to be a good fit for your year?
4. Relax
Allow those words to sink in for a while. Take your time, whether it's a few hours or a few days. Periodically ask yourself: How does my perception of these words evolve?
5. Celebrate
Suddenly, it'll click. You'll feel a sense of relaxation, energy, and inspiration. That's when you'll know you've found your word for the year. Congratulations!
The final step is to integrate your word into your daily life. Let it serve as a constant reminder of what is important to you this year. Connect it with your goals, write about it in your journal, or visualize it near your desk.
Will this be your best year ever?
